  • Internally Displaced People's Camp, with G-nuts (aka ground nuts or peanuts) in the foreground. Northern Uganda. 2008. With the dispersal of the LRA insurgent group that terrorized N. Uganda for 30 years, the displaced population finally have a chance to tentatively leave the camps of previously 40,000+ refugees, and return to their villages, slowly build up their crops and livestock, and not be dependent on the World Food Program and UNHCR for survival. At the time of this picture, many of the large refugee camps have downsized to populations of 2000-3000, with the creation of many satellite camps that would eventually be turned into village and trade centers, if peace holds. Much work still needs to be done to repair and rebuild the infrastructure, devastated economy, social services, and traumatized spirit of a very generous and resilient people.
