Break up of the sea ice on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, a portion of the Ross Ice Shelf demarcated by Ross Island, Black Island, and Minna Bluff
Taken 2011. During this season, the ice further retreated, threatening the road that led to the Pegasus Airfield, a permanent airstrip on the Ross Ice Shelf capable of landing a jet. The ice road had to be rerouted further in. Due to continued warming weather and retreat of the ice shelf, the Pegasus field was permanently closed as of Dec 2016. It had been operational since 1970s
