Alighting on Pegasus Icefield. Just mythical. And the smoothest land I have ever experienced in all my travels. Could not tell that we landed until the reverse thrusters fired.

Just outside medical. Our lil mascot, I guesss. Work is 6 days a week, from 7:30 to 5:30. Staffed by a doc, a midlevel, and a PT during the winter. Three docs, a nurse and nurse manager, PT, midlevel, flight surgeon (and his team) during the summers. Had been really hectic prior to my coming down, but has since settled quite a bit as the patient population dwindles.

Taken 2011. During this season, the ice further retreated, threatening the road that led to the Pegasus Airfield, a permanent airstrip on the Ross Ice Shelf capable of landing a jet. The ice road had to be rerouted further in. Due to continued warming weather and retreat of the ice shelf, the Pegasus field was permanently closed as of Dec 2016. It had been operational since 1970s

  • 2.22.11 Condition 2 weather. Ropes put up in place between critical buildings in preparation for Condition 1 weather, which means a lockdown of the premises until the condition passes. Main danger is wind, at times blowing 100mph and making metal objects airborne if unsecured, hence no travel outside buidings unless accompanied by Search and Rescue for emergency situations only. The ropes are there for guidance in case visibility becomes severely impaired. This rope is from Building 155 Aka Highway 1 to the clinic.

  • 2.26.11 Icy banks. The weather, wind/storms have been wreaking havoc on the ice. The eroding ice shelf poses a real danger to the road to the ice airfield, and might also pose a remote danger to the icefield itself.
