Tile at the end of the "Baltic Way," a human chain comprised of appx 2 million persons stretching 370 miles from Tallinn, Estonia, across Latvia, and ending in Vilnius, Lithuana to protest the Soviet occupation of the Baltic States. It took place on August 23, 1989, the 50th anniversary of the pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that carved up spheres of influence in Europe and led to the subsequent Soviet occupation of the Baltics in 1940. Six months following the Baltic Way, Lithuania became the first Baltic State to break away from the Soviet Union. "Stebuklas" means miracle.
